The empty shells are used for lime. Australian representative of this species are generally considered a distinct subspecies under the name Hemidonax donaciformis australiensis (Reeve, 1844). Occurs at the low tide mark (Ref. 348).

Members of the class Bivalvia are mostly gonochoric, some are protandric hermaphrodites. Life cycle: Embryos develop into free-swimming trocophore larvae, succeeded by the bivalve veliger, resembling a miniature clam.
