Most species of precious corals are slow growing , having low rates of recruitment and mortality and consequently are long-lived. The oldest colonies of this species in the Makapuu Bed off Oahu probably reach an age of 75 years. Fertilization is external, occurring within the water column. Larvae of this species remain competent for several weeks, according to a study conducted in the Mediterranean.
