Also known as panopeid mud crabs. Carapace usually hexagonal, transversely hexagonal or transversely ovate. Eyes normal, orbits never reaching edge of carapace. Antennae positioned adjacent to antennules, flagellum always free. Frontal margin usually bilobed. Anterolateral margins entire, or with 2 to 4 teeth or lobes. Chelipeds with fingers pointed or spoon-like, subequal or markedly unequal, similar or dissimilar in form. Male abdomen elongate and narrow, with segments 3 to 5 fused, covering most of sternite 4. First gonopod apex with complex lobes or folds; often with spines and long setae. Second gonopod shorter than first gonopod (Ref. 104052).
