Max. size:  750 cm TL (male/unsexed); 700 cm TL (female); max.weight: 3,000 kg
Environment:  pelagic; marine; depth range 0 - 8000 m, oceanodromous
Distribution:  Circumglobal. Tropical to polar regions.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Reported from 0 m-2079 m (Ref. 083345) but is observed to occur at greater depths based on more recent data and depth habitat use (Kaschner. K., pers. Comm., 20/10/14). Distributed in offshore waters of all oceans; prefer deep water (Ref. 936). Feeds in deep waters (Ref. 122680), mostly on deep sea squid, but also take on fish and some crustaceans (Ref. 936).
