Cosmopolitan: Known worldwide Canada to South America (south to 40° in Patagonia), Europe, South Africa, East Asia to Australia and New Zealand. Tropical to temperate.

Polyp is microscopic and sessile. It requires relatively stable substrate to attach to. Usually found on rocks, old wood and vegetation. Difficult to observe in its habitat but found to be present without the budding medusae. Medusa occurs seasonally, usually in the summer and early autumn (Ref. 117039). Distributed in many habitats, from small ponds to large reservoirs. Zooplanktivorous (Ref. 117042).
