Largest dromiid known. Occurs at depths of 5 to 50 m. Prefers moderately shallow waters with rocky-muddy substrates, sometimes near reefs. Omnivorous, feeds on sea stars. Carries sponges and colonial tunicates on its back for camouflage (Ref. 343). Members of the order Decapoda are mostly gonochoric. Mating behavior: Precopulatory courtship ritual is common (through olfactory and tactile cues); usually indirect sperm transfer (Ref. 833).
