Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Minimum depth from Ref. 123716. An epibenthic species (Refs. 1695, 87524) found on the continental shelf to the edge of the continental slope. In Firemore Bay, Loch Ewe, Scotland, the resident population has a variable age composition, suggesting an extended reproductive season. Juveniles occur throughout the year, with peak recruitment in April and July to August. May be of some value to local commercial fisheries on the north European continental shelf due to its common occurrence and wide distribution (Ref. 1695).

Life cycle and mating behavior Maturity | Reproduction | Spawning | Eggs | Fecundity | Larvae

Members of the class Cephalopoda are gonochoric. Male and female adults usually die shortly after spawning and brooding, respectively. Mating behavior: Males perform various displays to attract potential females for copulation. During copulation, male grasp the female and inserts the hectocotylus into the female's mantle cavity where fertilization usually occurs. Life cycle: Embryos hatch into planktonic stage and live for some time before they grow larger and take up a benthic existence as adults.
